Hi I'm Bob, glad to be a member in this new group, here's a general run down on what I'm up to:- I've been working full time freelancing since 2007, mainly with corporate work, shooting and editing promos and training videos as well as conference coverage. Last year I invested in a BMD ATEM and have lately been live producing multi cam event jobs. Just finished a web Tv show series on the arts, which I was co-producer and technical director for that we got a funding grant for from ARTS NSW - see www.the-litmus-test.com I also had a couple of years freelance contracting with some Ad agencies for shooting, cutting and delivering TVC's. But lately the TVC work has dried up, at last count have now shot, edited and delivered 33 TVC's. I've done a few industry courses at AFTRS over the years including FCP, TVC production, Location Sound, Modern Cinematography and Advanced Lighting. My love is narrative work and I've shot a few shorts and some feature sequences. Here's my IMDbI've got another new short in the can that was entered into Tropfest a few months ago and I just finished shooting a 6 part web series (Old Mates) that will come out in Jan 2016. Also just DPed a pilot for a children's TV show designed for the Chinese and Asian markets that a writer friend created. She will be taking that to Cannes in a few months to market it to networks and distributors. I've got a good kit of lighting/gels/stands, lenses, cameras/tripods/dolls/jibs and sound gear, DIT, PL insurance, as well as a good edit setup. I'm always looking for new opportunity, especially narrative production work.

I mustn't have pressed send this morning hahaha!
Hey Bob! Going freelance sounds exciting but intimidating for me! I like having the security of a salary paying job but one where I have the creative freedom of a freelancer. I would be very curious about the stories you have in becoming a successful freelancer (anyone who has freelanced for as long as you is successful!). Also, it's great to know of people who can call themselves 'camera operators' as I've worked on a 3 cam short, I was on one, but the other two (mind you do film making for the fun of it) couldn't pan smoothly or didn't focus properly (which I couldn't tell due to using the camera screen and not a monitor so I just assumed... D'oh!). So if I'm directing something, it would be great to work with you and give me less stress whether you're capturing shots properly haha!
By narrative driven, do you mean like Rocky in the Rocky films or narration voice over narrative, like noir kind of films?

The key to freelancing is building and maintaining networks. Most work comes from word of mouth so you have to be prepared to put in a lot of time marketing yourself. As for creative freedom the client is always your boss, some clients will give you a lot of slack others will be very specific. You have to bend with the creative breeze.
There is no easy way to getting into working for yourself, you have to make the jump and watch what you spend until you build your base.
